Like living on a construction site!

As well as living right on the Al Salam Street tunnel roadworks project, they are now laying new sewage pipes in our area. Work on the sewage pipes starts about 6am right outside our bedroom window! The tunnel roadworks are 24/7 .... we love it as you can imagine!

....yours for the annual rent of £30k. Great.

Here's the view from our bedroom window......

New Apartment

Well we have finally moved into our new apartment. We are very pleased with it and it is much nicer than the previous one - and cheaper to boot! The staff have been very helpful sorting things out for us. One great thing is that they don’t allow you to put your own pictures etc up on the wall in case you hit an electrical cable or something, so the maintenance men will come and do it for you! Hurrah!

And parking... oh my god , parking - you don’t know how wonderful it is to actually be able to park in my own space... hurrah no.2!

Unfortunately, we are still right on top of the roadworks, although the noise so far doesn’t seem to be too bad.

All in all though, I think we will be happy here.

Here’s some pictures of the place......

Al Mansoori Building Apartment

On the move again!

We have decided to move... again! This will be the 4th home we have lived in within 2 years!

Rental prices have softened in Abu Dhabi somewhat. There are many developments, on and off the main city island, that are now being completed. So, that together with the number of people that have moved to Dubai to take advantage of the massive drops there, has meant that the supply and demand balance has shifted slightly. Last year we paid 200k AED (c.£36k) for the annual rent on our 2 bedroom apartment. At the time this was not a bad price for the area, pretty average. When I discussed the price for the coming year with the building owner (bear in mind that there are about 70 flats in our building and this is probably not the only property he has - how rich must he be?), without any haggling on my part he offered us 150k AED. So that sounded better. Armed with this info I thought we should check out some other buildings around us, still close enough for Caz to walk to work, but that might have that most elusive of treasures in this part of town - a parking space! And guess what - we found one!

The map below shows where we are going......

It is the “Al Mansoori” building, named after the owner and his business, whose offices are also in the tower. It is still a 2 bedroom apartment, but it is bigger, with a full sized “Maid’s room” having it’s own en-suite, rather than the cupboard allocated to maids in our current block (not that we have a maid!), so you could pretty much call it a 3 bedroom. There is a swimming pool on the roof of the building and also a small gym. But the best thing is ... I will have an allocated, numbered, completely dedicated parking space in the underground car park! Yippee!! All-in with fees 174k AED + 4k deposit.

More for less. Bargain.

Roll on April 29th!

Man's body found in garbage chute

By Rayeesa Absal, Staff ReporterPublished: September 15, 2009, 22:53

Abu Dhabi: A man's body was found at the bottom of a rubbish chute in a building in the Mina area on Sunday morning.

The man, yet to be identified, is thought to be an Asian aged between 30 and 40, according to an official involved in the investigation.

The building is located next to the National Bank of Abu Dhabi building.

The watchman of the building found the body around 9am on Sunday as he went to clear trash from the garbage room. He immediately informed the authorities.

Police are investigating the case. "It is unclear as to how and when the man died, but we believe it has not been very long& Probably less than a day," the official said, asking not to be named.
The body was fully clothed and was not concealed in any way, he said.

"The body of the man had injuries, which could also be due to the impact of the fall. As the investigation is only in the preliminary stage, no more details are available," the official said.

We are in....

Well the move went relatively smoothly and we are now in our 2 bed flat in the City. I have to say the removal company was very good. I think you tend to set yourself low expectations out here, but they kept all their commitments and even made a courtesy call in the evening to ask if everything went well. Good job. So here's their plug...

We are already finding the new location better, with Caz walking to work and I'm able to get to my calls in the City more easily. The only nightmares were Etisalat (phone company) and ADDC (utility services company) - the first setting up our broadband wrong and me doing a lot of running around and making long phone calls to get it up and running; and the second because it took 2 hours with their customer services to open an account, and then only after agreeing to pay AED131 (c.£25) outstanding bill from the previous tenant! I shall be passing that on to the landlord!

It's still a bit hectic sorting everything out, so more later......

..and the big news of the day is.....

...we are moving home!!!! Or as they say over here we are "shifting" to another apartment. We really have had enough of life in Mohammed bin Zayed City, so we are moving to the City. Lots of people think we are mad because of the higher rents, therefore smaller places that are affordable and the total lack of parking in most areas. However, we need to feel like we are "connected" to this place and not isolated as we are now. If you look out of our window you see nothing except maybe someone arriving that lives upstairs. In the City there is life. There are people. There are shops and restaurants etc etc. We have none of this at the moment.

So, we have found an apartment which is right near Caroline's work, so she can walk there - perfect! It means we can dispense with one car, Caz can walk to work and when I am doing business in the City, which is 75% of the time, I am right there amongst it too. Here's the location of the tower....unfortunately no sea view for us!

Also when we have visitors they can easily walk to places or get cabs to go anywhere. No cabs ever come past our place in MBZC. The apartment is secured with a deposit, the contract will start 1st May, although we may not actually move in until a while after. Our current lease doesn't expire until July 5th, but our current landlord has agreed to release us 1 month early. We will be back in the UK from May 28th-June 6th, so basically we will definitely have to have moved before then.

So watch this space.........
