Work emails that make you smile

Here is a classic. I just had to share this one. This is a short email trail from my work yesterday. Names have been omitted to protect the retarded.

    From:J    Sent: 11/29/2012 01:10 PM ZE4    To:
Subject: Warning from Health and safety authority. No cat food inside the facility.

Hi all,
Please stop immediately to provide foods for cats as we are being warned by the health and safety officials.
The official has pointed out that this is attracting large number of cats inside our warehouse which creates a great risk for forklift drivers, cats are bouncing out of pallets in the morning as soon as reachtruck starts its operation.
Thanks for your cooperation.

Thanks and regards
J

Bouncing? Bouncing??! Do cats bounce??

Hi J,
Thanks for that update.
Next time the "Health & Safety" officials are here, could you ask them to check the fire escape from the upstairs office.
I am sure that  would be a much more pressing matter for them.

Best regards
K

Agree but maybe if we give the cats hard hats and high viz jackets then it may be acceptable as they will be easier to be seen??

Car make over

So I spent the day regaling stories of posh hotels, excessive speed and glamourous venues to my work colleagues today. As I went to the car park to leave for home, this is what greeted me.....

I guess they thought I deserved a permanent upgrade! Cheeky gits.... By the way, I did drive all the way home like that :-)

Emirati employment

I was reading another blog today which was written by an Emirati working as manager in the banking sector. He was discussing the banks rejection of an Emirati’s application for a gold card. The issue was around his existing debt and not his monthly earnings :-

“The man makes a good living, and he works in a govt entity that is arguably the best place to work in the WORLD. He had just joined 4 months ago, and makes 34K. This is his FIRST job, and once he passes the 6 month mark he will be making around 48K. I know this. Its all right there.”

This just shows how pampered these guys are. So, after 6 months in his first job he will be earning the equivalent of c£100k tax free (the figures quoted are in Dhs per month) and with a job for life. He might not even be any good at his job!

I worry for this country. I don’t know how it will ever truly be run by locals if they are not incentivised to perform or progress and not just given hugh sums of money on a plate for doing even the most trivial job. There is certainly no incentive for Emiratis to work in the private sector when such salaries and job security is available in the public sector. The government’s answer to this seems to be to offer subsidies to those employed in the private sector to bring them up to the level of the government jobs. So then you will have a low grade Emirati employee earning a salary 3 times his boss’s boss’s boss! Like that’s ever gonna be sustainable.....

Odd meeting

I just thought I’d share some moments of a meeting I attended today.

Firstly: The tea boy. Every company you go to here will have an Indian (or Bangladeshi/Pakistani) tea boy who will be called (or shouted to) to come and take an order for drinks. So the lad comes in (by the way our tea boy at work is probably about 58!), and goes round the room. “yes sir..” he says to me. I say in very clear, pronounced English “coffee please, with milk, no sugar” to which he replies, “black coffee?”. I say “no, with milk please, no sugar” - tea boy shakes his head in an “ok I got you kind of way”. Drinks arrive. Mine is black. I say, “can I have some milk please”. “ok”, he takes it away. Sometime later he returns with white coffee! Hurrah! I drink some......It’s got sugar in! Aaagghhhhh! I just drink it. I know there could be a language problem, but he only has one job to do all day and that is make drinks, you would have thought he would have picked up the difference between black, white, with milk, sugar and no sugar!

The meeting was with the Project Management company and the Engineering Consultant for a building security project. The project is for a government organisation. Now, the client (the government organisation), had instructed the project team that under no circumstances shall there be any products installed in the building that originated from China. These days that is a tough call, because even if you propose a solution from a highly regarded, global manufacturer, they will inevitably have some manufacturing going on in China.

Products from China, per se, are not a problem. Products that come from some nondescript , generic, white-label factory that are then just “badged” as someone’s product may be a problem. In my industry we see plenty of examples of this and there can be some pretty poor products out there sold this way, so I can kind of understand the reticence about using products from China. However, the manufacturer in question built and owns their factory, it was built to the exact same standards as all their factories globally, it has the same manufacturing equipment, highly experienced staff from all over the world running it and the products produced are exactly the same as those produced elsewhere and carry the same warranty. But no, if the Country of Origin is China it is “haram”, not allowed. They made exceptions for products from Cisco and HP, as there was no other product source in some cases.

So now they will have pay up to 50% more in some cases to have the same items sourced from Europe. Oh, and Taiwan is ok apparently - go figure! I’m sure if we applied the same principle to our daily lives, we would not leave the house, or even get out of bed, as pretty much everything we touch has some connection to China these days it seems.

Two other things things made me smile in the meeting. The first was an exchange where the project manager was told “I know where you are coming from”, to which he replied, “yes, I am coming from Alexandria!”. The other was when we were asked to supply a revised proposal “later today, or before tomorrow” - yesterday maybe??!!

Thank god that's over

Had a bitch of a day today. Left the house at 6.45, got back home about 21.30 - not bad for a day at the office! Had to finish a tender proposal and hand deliver it to Etisalat - I hope it was worth it!

I think if I go home to the UK and continue to work these hours I will definitely win the employee of the year award, 'cos no other bugger will be working as long!

Leave 6.45 tomorrow for Bahrain, back Tuesday evening about 10pm.

UK Work visit

I took a train today to do a work visit to one of our UK based suppliers, much to Caz's annoyance at me taking a day out of our weeks holiday to do it! The appointment will however hopefully sort some things out that will make my life easier in one of my accounts when I get back, so for me it is worth it. And anyway, I'll get the day back on my return.

Being on a train again was a good experience. What a difference it could make if the UAE (and GCC beyond) had a good train service. I was on South West Trains which went on time, was clean and comfortable. The only thing that was a pain was my phone cutting in and out as I was trying to catch up with the office in Dubai.

It was lovely to see the green countryside of England as I travelled through to the New Forest, where the company was based. I do miss the greenness when I am in the UAE.

Costa here isn't the same though without the "Hello sirrrrrr", or "Make it hot for you sirrrrrr?" (a favourite service offer of mine). You do notice the lower service levels here, although often it's not that you don't get it, it's just the attitude with which it is given. A smile wouldn't go amiss.

The British love to be moaning about something, so as it has been about 26C and sunny here loads of people are complaining about the heat. Some people just can't be pleased, the ones now moaning about the heat are probably the same ones moaning about the cold earlier in the year! I can honestly say that after Abu Dhabi I will never again say I am hot in England! There has been a lovely cool breeze with the sun which you just don't get in the UAE in the summer. Any wind in the summer in Abu Dhabi is like turning a hairdryer on straight into your face.

Off to meet an old work mate for a drink in the City (of London) this afternoon, so will be good to catch up and have a natter. Caz says we gossip more than girls do, but I don't actually think that is possible. We do moan a lot about people and work etc., but men could never bitch like women, well not straight ones anyway.

Uk Panorama causes a stir....

My blogging has been somewhat sporadic since I got back from the UK, work just seems to be taking up most of my waking hours - not good!

Check out the story bottom right on the front page today. I haven't watched the report yet, although I hope to tonight. It has certainly got the locals checking out the facts. Panorama is a pretty reliable UK journalistic source and from what I know and have seen for myself, their findings really wouldn't surprise me one bit.

Feeling weary

Its the end of a long week and I'm knackered! Got in at about 9.15 tonight having had meetings in Dubai late this afternoon, going on into the evening. Two people have commented this week that I look tired - not good. I even had one of my customers who guessed my age as 48! (think I'll have to put his prices up!). I was 42 on Monday - Happy Birthday to me. It was nice to get some cards from home, but special days just don't feel as special out here somehow.

Today I am feeling 48. But next Thursday we fly home for a well deserved break. I am back for 1 week and Caz (who has more holiday days than me) will stay for 2. We are both really looking forward to going home to see everyone. We now also have a long weekend with 3 days off together so that will be nice, although Caz will be sleeping most of tomorrow as she has been working nights this week. Off to the Rugby 7s World Cup in Dubai on Saturday though - my birthday treat!

As this is such a multi-cultural place I have met loads of people from many different nationalities through my work. The phone book on my mobile now looks like the United Nations phone directory! There are also some people with some funny names. I met 2 in particular that I had to stop myself from laughing when they introduced themselves...the first one below was introduced to me by one of my customers, who introduced him as his boss

The second one is self explanatory!
